While history shows us that "Under God" indeed is fairly new (added in June 1954) in the History of the United States of America, it was added after a time when America and its "Greatest Generation" had finished giving all they had to give: blood, sweat, tears and in over half a million cases, their precious lives during WW II. The addition of “Under God” was done quite publicly by President and former Supreme Allied Commander of Europe Dwight D Eisenhower with the support of Congress.
So why should this generation be allowed to soil the work and sacrifice that the previous generation made for us to live, grow, and prosper in this great nation?
The United States was founded based upon Religious Freedom, not Freedom from Religion. Under God is a generic term that does not establish any Religion over another as was done with the Church of England being Protestant ( I am not sure which flavor as I am Roman Catholic).
We are a nation of laws so saying I do not wish to impose my ideas / ideals upon someone else is hypocritical as the Constitution is indeed the imposition of ideas and a Way of Life onto a nation by well meaning individuals and voted on by "We the people".
America continues to loose its value system and is becoming morally bankrupt.
In a letter written August, 1954. President Eisenhower said: "These words [“under God”] will remind Americans that despite our great physical strength we must remain humble. They will help us to keep constantly in our minds and hearts the spiritual and moral principles which alone give dignity to man, and upon which our way of life is founded . . ."
